43BN JavaScript 102: Introduction to Server-Side JavaScript (Node.js)

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Already the most prominent programming language on the internet, JavaScript is now available to server-side developers as well! This session will extend the basic concepts introduced in JavaScript 101 to show how RPG developers can create a practical back-end application on IBM i written entirely in Node.js. This session will include straightforward instructions and references for getting Node.js installed and operating on your IBM i system, followed by an easy-to-follow demonstration of Node.js in action. We'll take a simple RPG program and show how to write its equivalent in Node, taking care to explain the unique nuances of database access in Node's asynchronous environment.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn how to get Node.js up and running on your IBM i
2. Understand the fundamental differences between RPG and Node.js, particularly where it involves accessing IBM i DB2 data
3. See how a typical RPG program would be coded in Node.js
